Air-Crane Aids in Building Generators

By James T. McKenna | February 27, 2007

European Air-Crane, the European office of Erickson Air-Crane, has participated with Vestas Wind Systems A/S of Denmark in the construction of 3-mW wind turbine generators southeast of Salerno and Mount Vesuvius in Italy. The S-64F Aircrane used a 400-ft line to lift 36 blades, each measuring 144 ft. The blades will be attached to 12 wind turbine generators. The S-64F carried the blades 9 mi to each site where the generators are being constructed. Thirty-nine blades were lifted in less than four days. Narrow and steep roads prohibited transporting the blades on ground vehicles.
