PUBLIC SERVICE/POLICE

The helicopter unit of the Dallas Police Dept. is flying high these days, with the delivery of a new Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger, another 206B3 scheduled to have been delivered at the end of April, and a Bell 407 on the way in July or August.

The department flies two 206s and two OH-58s purchased from the U.S. Army in 1995. The OH-58s were reconfigured for law enforcement purposes. All rotorcraft in the department are used to patrol and support the Dallas population of 1.2 million. The 19-person unit has 13 pilots with 2-4 on duty at any one time. The unit has a 24/7 mission. None of its aircraft are equipped for medical evacuation purposes.
