The Shanghai Public Security Bureau has ordered two twin-engine EC135s and one EC155 from Eurocopter in another step toward establishing a police helicopter squad in that Chinese city.
The aircraft are to be used during the Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing. In addition, the helicopters will be used on air patrol and reconnaissance. They also are to be used for emergency medical, evacuation, firefighting, search-and-rescue, and ground traffic control missions. The bureau had advertised for 10 police helicopters in December.
China has established a national policy to set up police aviation units. Shanghai is the latest municipality to take Eurocopters. Guangdong’s police operate one EC135 and one EC120. Eurocopter claims a 45-percent share of China’s civil and parapublic helicopter market. In 2003, Eurocopter opened a maintenance center with Citic Offshore Helicopter Co. in Shenzen. In 2006, Eurocopter China Co. Ltd. was opened to centralize commercial operations.
