India Readies Base In Tajikistan

By Staff Writer | July 23, 2007

India is establishing a military base in Tajikistan, according to Domain-B, an on-line Indian business magazine. India is preparing to deploy Russian-built Mi-17s to the Ayni airbase in Tajikistan, possibly before the end of the year. It would be India’s first expansion into the area of energy-rich central Asia. India recently completed refurbishing the airbase, unoccupied since the late 1980’s after the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The base will be operated under a joint agreement between Russia, India and Tajikistan. For related news
