Indian Air Force Makes First NVG Rescue

By Staff Writer | August 24, 2007

The Indian air force has completed its first casualty evacuation at night using night-vision goggles, according to The Hindu newspaper.  The service’s eastern air command received a request from the Army late on Aug. 20 to evacuate two casualties, including one with a serious head injury. An air force Mil Mi-17 was airborne within 12 min. of the request, the paper said, en route to the rescue in a narrow valley close to the international border with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Butan and China. Without the NVGs, the evacuation would have had to wait until daybreak. The use of NVGs is expected to boost the morale of soldiers in remote posts where air travel had so far been restricted to daylight hours.  For related news
