Rotorcraft Report: New Zealand Area Looks To Privately Funded Heliport

By Staff Writer | September 1, 2007

A 10-pad commercial heliport is being proposed by the Franz Alpine Resort, 1.5 nm (3 km) north of the Franz Josef area of New Zealand.

Currently, the Westland District Council operates a four-pad heliport close to the township of Franz Josef. There are three operators, each limited to three aircraft. The heliport is closed to outside operators. In the summer, 11 helicopters fly sightseeing tours 10 hr a day.

The council has received numerous complaints from neighbors concerning noise and the restriction on competition. Hokitika Airport, Hokitika New Zealand has proposed a new helicopter landing site for the current and additional operators. The council said both proposals are well-advanced. Heliport development would be funded by lease payments or landing fees.
