Rotorcraft Report: Italy Takes Delivery Of First NH90

By Staff Writer | February 1, 2008

The Italian Army’s Aviation Unit took delivery of its first NH90 multi-purpose helicopter in late December.

The army has ordered 60 NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters (TTH), which are to replace older models operated by the service in various utility roles. The new, twin-engine NH90s are intended to give the army’s Aviation Unit a dramatic improvement in operational capability and mission effectiveness.

AgustaWestland also is to provide the army’s NH90s with a complete product support and training package through the Phased Logistic Support program. The initial support contract is for three years.

The NH90 TTH version is designed for tactical transport of 16-20 troops and material. Additional applications include medical evacuation (carrying 12 stretchers), special operations, and airborne command post. The NH90 TTH design is designed for low acoustic, radar, and infrared signatures and is equipped with night-vision systems (forward-looking infrared, night-vision goggles, helmet-mounted sight and display). Other features include a weather radar, digital map, obstacle warning system, cable cutters, armored pilot seats, defensive weapons suite, and passive and active countermeasures. The TTH variant is also equipped with a rear-loading ramp to allow the internal transport of a light vehicle.
