By James T. McKenna | February 11, 2008

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. plans to fly its Light Combat Helicopter for the first time by year's end, reports The Economic Times of India. It quoted the chairman and managing director of the state-run manufacturer, Ashok Baweja, as saying the new helicopter's design has been finished in a record time for the company. "We needed approximately five years to design the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, but for [the Light Combat Helicopter], we have completed it within 16-17 months," he said. Based on the Dhruv, the new helicopter is designed to operate at very high altitudes and carry helmet-mounted targeting systems, electronic warfare systems, and advanced weapons systems. It is to be powered by the Shakti engine developed by HAL and Turbomecca. The Indian Air Force is to receive the first of the new helicopters in 2010. For related news
