Brazil is to sign a deal with France to build 50 military helicopters as part of a broader strategic defense alliance, according to the Reuters news service and other media reports. Under the proposed pact, Eurocopter’s Helibras subsidiary in Brazil would set up a line to produce the latest version of the Cougar, the EC725. Brazil’s air force, army, and navy all operate earlier versions of the Cougar. Reuters quoted Brazil’s defense minister, Nelson Jobim, as saying, "We should sign all the necessary documents in June or July." Brazil has embarked on a major program to upgrade its armed forces, with an eye toward better defending its offshore oil fields and its porous border in the Amazon jungle. For related news
