Crashed Medevac Helo Was Awaiting NVGs

By James T. McKenna | June 10, 2008

The PHI Air Medical medevac helicopter that crashed the night of June 8 near Huntsville, Texas was awaiting installation of a night-vision system, according to the Associated Press.  The Bell Helicopter 407 crashed in Sam Houston National Forest about 2.5 min after departing Huntsville Memorial Hospital about 0245 local. The time was fixed by a GPS-based onboard flight-following system. The pilot, paramedic and flight nurse were killed, as was the patient being transported to Houston. The AP quoted an NTSB investigator as saying the aircraft came in at an angle with an extended flight path. "It definitely was not a vertical impact," the investigator, Jennifer Kaiser, said.
