Rotorcraft Report: JetRanger Gets EVS Upgrade

By Staff Writer | October 1, 2008

Max-Viz of Portland, Ore. designs, manufactures, certifies and distributes infra-red and multi-spectral enhanced vision systems (EVS) for civil and military rotorcraft.

The company received an amended supplemental type certificate with parts manufacturing approval that incorporated the necessary switching and wiring provisions required for the next generation, dual field of view EVS-1500 sensor. It recently announced the first EVS-1500 installation on a Bell Helicopter 206B3 operated by Columbia Flyer¹s out of Gig Harbor, Wash.

The dual field-of-view (FoV) EVS-1500 presents a wide-angle, 53-deg FoV capability while also incorporating an optical zoom feature which presents a much higher resolution image in a 30-deg FoV. These two complementary (and pilot selectable) images allow for enhanced obstacle detection, which is particularly useful for much of the work the owner of this JetRanger performs.
