Chinook Pilot Receives DFC

By Staff Writer | October 31, 2008

On Oct. 30, 2008, in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty the Queen of England bestowed the Distinguished Flying Cross to RAF helicopter pilot Lt. Nichol James Emslie Benzie for his actions in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. On Nov. 9, 2007, Benzie flew his Chinook into what was described as “ferocious” heavy machine gun and anti-aircraft fire in a restricted landing zone to rescue fellow soldiers. The following day he again braved heavy fire to deliver a slung-load of ammunition to soldiers. After dropping the supplies, he left the area, then returned for his third trip through anti-aircraft fire to successfully evacuate the wounded. For related news
