Helicopters Fight Crop-Damaging Frost

By Staff Writer | November 10, 2008

For the past few nights, an estimated 500 rotorcraft were dispatched across New Zealand in an effort to protect vineyards and orchards against severe frost. In some areas, temperatures dropped to minus four degrees, leaving entire crops vulnerable to costly devastation. Helicopters utilized onboard thermometers to find warm air then push it down onto crops with downwash from the rotor blades.  Immediate assessments suggest the operation was a success, but it will be at least two days before vineyard owners are certain.
