Rotorcraft Report: U.S. Wants More UH-72s

By Staff Writer | January 1, 2009

This latest contract, asking for 39 Lakotas, brings the total number of UH-72As ordered by the Army to 123 and the acquisition value up to $208 million. The extended production will run through 2010 and be conducted at the EADS North America plant in Columbus, Miss.

The contract modification calls for some of the Lakotas to be equipped for both medevac and VIP operations.

The Army has plans to acquire more than 300 of the militarized Eurocopter EC-145 helicopters through 2016, employing them for missions ranging from homeland security through logistics flights. Army and National Guard units have already accepted 49 Lakotas and the U.S. Navy ordered five for pilot training at the Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Md.
