BAE Systems has begun promoting a hostile fire detector designed for helicopters. Similar to the Boomerang System used by some military ground units on their personnel carriers, BAE’s helicopter offering consists of microphones located in several positions on the aircraft’s exterior which can detect the sound of ground fire, triangulate its position and give the aircrew a relative bearing to the source of the possible threat. Designing the system for aircraft took longer because of the complications associated with speed. For related news
