NTSB Recommends TV Pilot Restrictions

By Staff Writer | January 29, 2009

The National Transportation Safety Board voted unanimously to recommend all news gathering operations forbid pilots from doing on-the-air reporting while flying. This recommendation comes after the NTSB’s investigation into the July 2007 fatal mid-air collision of two TV helicopters in Phoenix. The Board determined that the pilots had become distracted with broadcasting duties while flying in close proximity to each other during a police chase, resulting in the accident.  The NTSB feels that operators should ensure non-flying crewmembers handle reporting duties.
