VH-71 Significantly Over Budget

By Staff Writer | January 29, 2009

The Department of the Navy has officially informed Congress that the VH-71 presidential helicopter program is significantly over budget. In fact, the anticipated price for the three-engine executive transport helicopter has nearly doubled in the past three years from $6.1 billion to $11.2 billion. Those figures push the program under the purview of the Nunn-McCurdy Amendment, which requires an intense reevaluation of defense spending programs that run significantly over budget or behind schedule. It is the same amendment that officially killed the ARH-70 helicopter program in 2008. The VH-71 is based on the EH101/AW101 built by AgustaWestland in partnership with Lockheed Martin.
