Chilean Crash Kills 13

By Staff Writer | February 17, 2009

Twelve firefighters and their pilot were killed when their helicopter crashed in dense fog Sunday afternoon near Chanco, Chile. Cmdr. Eduardo Canala Pecchenino of the air force, who had recently completed a tour of duty as Chilean President Michelle Bachelet’s helicopter pilot in December of 2008, was piloting the aircraft. Pecchenini was carrying a team of firefighters to another scene when he apparently struck a mountain obscured by fog. Investigators believe all were killed instantly. For related news
