German and U.S. Helicopter Thwart Pirate Attack

By Staff Writer | March 4, 2009

Tuesday morning, German and U.S. military helicopters responded to a distress call from the MV Courier, a freighter passing through a portion of the Gulf of Aden known for pirate attacks. Two helicopters were launched - one each from the German frigate Rheinland-Pfalz and the USS Montery - and flew 50 nautical miles to assist the captain and his crew. Upon their arrival, the aircraft located a small boat occupied by pirates firing upon the freighter. The helicopters laid down gunfire, causing the pirates to break off their attack and flee. The would-be bandits were later intercepted by the Rheinland-Pfalz and detained. For related news
