Beacons Subject of North Sea Ops Meeting

By Staff Writer | April 20, 2009

Oil and Gas UK, a representative body for the United Kingdom’s offshore oil and gas industry, called a meeting of North Sea platform operators and politicians to discuss helicopter transport safety issues, mostly because of the recent fatal crash of a Bond Offshore Helicopters Super Puma. One topic of discussion was the Civil Aviation Authority’s rule against the wearing of personal locator beacons by offshore platform workers once they have boarded a helicopter. The beacon is designed to be worn on the platform and serve as an aid to rescuers if the worker goes into the water. The CAA, however, says the device can interfere with critical avionics. The OGUK called for lifting the restriction, or developing a PLB that will not affect avionics, saying it will reduce fatalities associated with ditching in the sea. For further information
