Italians Push for VH-71 Helicopter

By Staff Writer | June 1, 2009

In a letter from Ignazio La Russa, Italy’s minister of defense, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has been asked to keep the VH-71 presidential helicopter program alive. The VH-71 was designed to replace the aging fleet of helicopters currently in use to transport the President of the United States and his entourage, but was put on hold due to time and cost overruns. La Russa made no secret in the letter that his government wants the program to continue in order to protect jobs at Agusta Westland, the Italian manufacturer of the AW101, from which the VH-71 is based. La Russa’s letter to Gates went on to say that his government is willing to help in that effort in any way it can. For related news
