Rotorcraft Report: Helicopters Play Crucial Role in LA Firefighting Efforts

By Staff Writer | October 1, 2009

Waterbombing aircraft and helicopters continued to battle wildfires in southern California into September. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), the fires were around 90 percent contained on September 15. The fire claimed the lives of two veteran LACoFD officers — Capt. Tedmund "Ted" Hall and Firefighter Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Quinones — when their truck plunged off a mountain road on August 30 while seeking an escape route for people surrounded by flames. Around 160,550 acres had burned through the middle of the month, including more than 80 homes, the department estimates. Shown here is an LACoFD Sikorsky S-70A dousing flames during a recent operation.
