Rotorcraft Report: SAR Awards Go to UK, Canadian Crews

By Staff Writer | November 1, 2009

Two separate search and rescue (SAR) helicopter crews have been given awards in recent weeks. Sikorsky Aircraft has named an S-92 helicopter crew operating on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) the winner of its Winged S Rescue Award. The crew lifted 14 fisherman from a boat while battling 70-knot winds during a 2008 mission for CHC at St. Kilda. Capt. Liz Forsyth, copilot Michael Melaye, winch operator Larry Slater and winchman Phil Warrington were honored, as well as the MCA Stornoway Rescue base.

The AgustaWestland-sponsored 2009 Cormorant Trophy has gone to the crew of the Canadian Forces 442 Search and Rescue Squadron, based at CFB Comox. The crew was involved in a night rescue of a skier that had fallen 30 meters into a crevasse, 8,700 feet above sea level on Hamathko Glacier. The trophy recognizes the most significant SAR mission performed in Canada during the course of the year. AgustaWestland presented it to crew members during the recent SAREX conference in Snelling, Calif.
