The U.S. Army has placed an order for 45 additional EADS North America UH-72A Lakotas. The $247.2-million contract brings the total number of Army UH-72As on order to 178.

The latest agreement—the fifth issued to date—covers fiscal year 2010 production for the light utility helicopter (LUH), with delivery running through June 2011. EADS North America CEO Sean O’Keefe says that the UH-72A program “is a key element in the Army’s aviation modernization effort.” The multi-role helicopters will come with hardware and equipment for medial evacuation, personnel transport and other missions.
