Helos Sent as Russian Fires Rage

By Staff Writer | August 4, 2010

Two helicopters—a Kamov Ka-32A and a Mil Mi-17-1B—left Azerbaijan on Wednesday headed to Russia to join efforts to bring widespread wildfires under control. The fires resulted in the deaths of 48 people through Wednesday, according to reports. The helicopters—which Azerbaijan purchased from Russia’s emergency ministries in 2008—took off from Heydar Aliyev Intl Airport (GYD) in Baku with 19-person crews. They will battle fires in the Lipetsk and Voronezh providences.
