Sikorsky has received the first major structural subassemblies for the CH-53K from White Plains, N.Y.-based ITT Corp. The handover follows a three-year development effort for the heavy lift helicopter’s sponsons, which attach to each side of the fuseage. Produced at ITT Electronic Systems in Salt Lake City, Utah, the sponsons are 25 feet long, four feet wide and five feet high. The initial delivery covers the first prototype CH-53K.
