Sikorsky Innovations Completes Active Rotor Wind Tunnel Testing

By Staff Writer | June 1, 2011

The technology development arm of Sikorsky Aircraft has concluded wind tunnel testing of its active rotor system with high authority flaps. Sikorsky and the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) jointly funded the effort. The testing sought to determine the functionality of a trailing edge flap and closed loop control system. The system was put through “a variety of forward flight conditions up to 140 knots,” explained Chris Van Buiten, director of Sikorsky Innovations.
