Safran Group subsidiary Microturbo has conducted the initial flight trials of the e-APU60 auxiliary power unit as part of AgustaWestland’s efforts to certify the AW189. The in-flight start of the APU represents a milestone in the certification process, with the performance described as “up to par with the ambitious goals we set,” according to Microturbo CEO Pierre-Yves Morvan. The company will incorporate two additional prototype engines into the flight test program, along with five development engines that will verify endurance and reliability under extreme operating conditions. Microturbo anticipates EASA certification by mid-2013.
