The Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum hosted an event dedicated to helicopters on August 11 at the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Virginia. Helicopters on display outside the museum consisted of a Fairfax County Police Bell 429, U.S. Coast Guard Eurocopter MH-65 Dolphin, UH-72 Lakota, MD500 and Robinson R22.

Stations inside the museum included a safety briefing and topics ranging from helicopter discovery and principles of flight to booths for the Navy Helicopter Association, Virginia Airborne Search and Rescue, Whirly-Birds and Helicopter Association International. Intended for children as part of the museum’s “Super Science Saturday” program, the stations also included art activities, a helicopter hunt, “paper copters” and storytime.
