Michigan-based Beaumont Health System is partnering with PHI Air Medical to launch an air medical service using a Eurocopter EC135 based at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The twin-engine, six-place helicopter known as “Beaumont One” will serve patients, hospitals and law enforcement agencies over an area covering much of southeast Michigan, as well as parts of northern Ohio.

Beaumont notes that an April American Medical Association study found that critically injured patients have a 16 percent higher chance of survival when transported via helicopter to a Level 1 trauma center, and 15 percent for Level II centers. PHI Air Medical, based out of Phoenix, will supply the helicopter and a 14-person crew of pilots, mechanics, paramedics and nurses. The new service became operational August 13.
