U.S. Navy Launches First Manned/Unmanned Helicopter Squadron

By Staff Writer | May 8, 2013

The U.S. Navy's Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35 (HSM-35) has incorporated unmanned aircraft into its operations, becoming the first squadron to feature both manned and unmanned helicopters. HSM-35 will feature the Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk and the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle (VTUAV). Designated the "Magicians," the unit adopted the call sign of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 35, which was decommissioned in 1992.

The MQ-8B will provide situational awareness and target support for the MH-60R during anti-submarine warfare missions. Naval Air Forces Commander David H. Buss said the Magicians will "chart the course for Naval Aviation's operating future."

The squadron will begin training this summer.
