The CAE NH-90 simulator in Australia is the first to attain Level D certification, according to industry sources who spoke with Rotor & Wing at the Paris Air Show. The Australian Army and Navy will be sharing 24 MRH-90s. The Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) is also believed to be considering buying simulators for its fleet of 20 NH-90s in the tactical transport helicopter (TTH) configuration.
CAE is also the prime contractor for the U.S. Navy’s Sikorsky MH-60R/S helicopter and will be providing the Australian Navy with two MH-60R tactical operational trainers (flight simulator and rear crew trainers), together with avionics maintenance and weapons load trainers (AMT/WLT). All will be set in place during 2015. The Australian Navy currently has personnel training with the U.S. Navy at North Island and Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida. Denmark is also expected to be a customer following its decision to purchase of nine MH-60Rs.
Two out of three of the United Kingdom’s Chinook simulators at RAF Benson have also been updated to keep crew training in line with the Project Julius upgrades to the RAF’s Boeing Chinooks. CAE’s Puma simulator contract has been extended and the simulator upgraded in line with the delivery of Puma Mk2 aircraft from Eurocopter. This will now extend to 2017 alongside the rest of the Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility. Looking ahead to the Dubai Airshow in November, it is understood that there is a healthy requirement for military helicopter trainers among the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, potentially for army, navy and special forces. These would come through the U.S. DoD foreign military sales (FMS) program, commercial sales or via joint venture partnerships. Further east, it was recently announced that Brunei is constructing a Multi-Purpose Training Center that will house three CAE simulators including two dedicated to Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk and S-92 helicopters.
