Kaman Grows Focus on Engineering for Rotorcraft Structures

By Staff Writer | February 24, 2014

Kaman Aerospace (Booth 4922) continues to expand its reach as a helicopter support powerhouse, now doing business with major OEMs such as Bell, Boeing, Sikorsky, MD Helicopters, and Lockheed Martin, among others. The company’s Aerosystems group provides tip-to-tail services and components, with the ability to handle virtually any aspect of aerospace design and manufacturing requirements.

Jim Larwood, president of Aerosystems, and other Kaman personnel will be attending Heli-Expo 2014.

This year, Kaman’s Jacksonville, Fla. facility will continue delivering cockpits (including doors and transparencies), and lower fuselages (including skids), for the Bell AH-1Z Zulu helicopter. Two complete Zulu structures were delivered in 2013 and production is ramping up in 2014.

The company recently achieved a major milestone, delivering its 1,000th Black Hawk cockpit, including electrical harnesses and control inputs, to Sikorsky Aircraft, and that work is continuing into 2014. Additional work, for Boeing, will continue with deliveries of CH-47 composite engine inlet screens and tunnel covers. Kaman Engineering Services, a subsidiary of Kaman Aerospace, received a Boeing Supplier of the Year award for 2012.

Other products include specialty-bearings that range from low- and high-speed drive shafts and couplings, to flight control bearings. Kaman also manufactures skin-to-core composite layups for Bell commercial helicopter blades, and is on track to deliver 28 CH-148 composite tail rotor pylons, completely stuffed, in 2014. Two new facilities are coming online in the first quarter of 2014, including a specialty bearings facility in Hochstadt, Germany, and a new state-of-the-art tooling facility for large tooling manufacture in Lancashire, England.

The company will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of K-Max helicopter certification in 2014.
