The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has purchased an Airbus Helicopters AS350B3e to serve as a flying scientific laboratory.
Ordered in December 2013 and scheduled for delivery this summer, the AS350B3e will be primarily used as a research platform and come equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The university’s first helicopter was purchased using gifts from private foundations and an anonymous donor.
The Helicopter Observation Platform (HOP) will allow scientists to obtain vital information on environmental processes and mechanisms that affect climate and impact human health. It also will be utilized for aerial photography of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, and transportation of scientists and their equipment to remote areas difficult or impossible to access from the ground.
