PaR Systems, an aerospace manufacturing, material handling, automation, and robotic solutions company, has created a new friction stir welding process for a range of applications. Called the I-RoboSTIR solution, the process produces high-quality welds on 3D parts at high travel speeds. This technology is used to produce large structures including high-speed trains, light jets and space launch systems. The technology is expected to replace conventional fusion welding and assembly processes such as riveting. The system relies on the I-STIR controller to regulate the process, and relies on the robot controller for the weld path motion, also equipped with a path-correction feature that counteracts any manipulator or fixture deflections.
