FAA Designates Super Bowl XLIX a "No Drone Zone"

By By Joseph Ambrogne | January 30, 2015

The FAA has published a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and a YouTube video warning aviators that the airspace over Super Bowl XLIX will be off limits to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

The NOTAM summarizes a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that will be in effect over the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 1, 2015. Among other restricted air operations, it lists model aircraft operations, model rocketry, and UAS as prohibited in the defined airspace. The NOTAM makes it clear that any violations may result in criminal or civil penalties.

The 15-second video, entitled "No Drone Zone", includes the following narration: "Going to the big game? Have fun, cheer on your team, and keep it a no drone zone. Don't spoil the game, leave your drone at home."
