Japan’s order for 150 military versions of Bell Helicopter’s 412EPI could boost commercial sales of that twin-engine helicopter, according to the manufacturer’s CEO. Bell and its Japanese partner of 55 years, Fuji Heavy Industries, won the UH-X contract July 17. It calls for deliveries of the UH-1J replacement to Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force to start in 2021. To offset development costs of the customized military helicopter, Japan plans to sell the aircraft to other nations. But Bell President/CEO John Garrison said in a TV interview with Bloomberg Business July 29 that “there’s also the opportunity to export these aircraft into the commercial market in the surrounding area.”
