At ALEA 2015, the Airborne Law Enforcement Association honored aviation units for making safe use of night vision goggles. Six units were recognized for successfully implementing NVGs within their programs for a number of years. Those awardees included EMS operator Boston MedFlight and Calgary Police Service’s Air Support Unit, for the 5 Year Service Award; the Texas Department of Public Safety, for the 10 Year Service Award; Santa Barbara County’s Air Support Unit and Air Methods Corp., for the 15 Year Service Award; and the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Air Rescue Units, for the 20 Year Service Award. Santa Barbara’s unit also won the Community Awareness Award—given to recipients for pioneering the use of NVGs in their communities, raising awareness of their importance or helping other organizations implement them. The Night Vision Awards, created in 2011, are presented three times each year; along with ALEA’s event, at HAI’s Heli-Expo and the Air Medical Transport Conference.
