AgustaWestland recently set a new speed record for its AW609 TiltRotor, which flew 1,161 km between company facilities in England and Italy in 2 hr 18 min. The point-to-point journey began with a vertical takeoff from AW’s Yeovil facility in Southern England, transitioned into a 25,000-ft cruising flight that crossed over the Alps, and ended with a descent to AW’s Cascina Costa facility near Milan, Italy. The AW609—with a maximum range of 2,036 km and a top speed of 510 kph—is marketed for corporate and offshore transport, EMS, SAR and homeland security missions. Though it shares design features with the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, AW says its AW609 is not intended to be direct competition for the military role.
