AgustaWestland received EASA approval for a limited ice protection system in its medium twin-engine AW189. It is the first such certification within that helicopter category. The AW189 will be able to fly in known, predefined icing conditions as long as it can descend into a known band of positive temperature throughout its intended route. Such conditions are typical in the North Sea region, where nearly 20 AW189 already perform in missions such as oil and gas transport and SAR. An equipped AW189 still meets Category A performance requirements and suffers only minor restrictions during IFR flights in low temperature and icing conditions.
