A little more than a year after issuing its first heliport license, the United Arab Emirates’ civil aviation authority hosted what it said was the first international heliport seminar in the Middle East. Nearly 100 heliport and helicopter operators and industry representatives from 10 countries attended the Dec. 8 to 10 event in Dubai, according to a report by the Emirates News Agency. The agency added that the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority hosted the event in conjunction with the International Civil Aviation Heliport Design Working Group. In December 2014, that authority issued its first heliport license to Dubai’s Burj Al Arab luxury hotel. The seminar included an “interactive heliport certification workshop” and produced recommendations for the nations of ICAO’s Middle East region to review regulations related to heliports “with particular emphasis on safety management systems, creating databases of heliports and forming heliport technical committees to examine training standards and related competencies,” the news report said.
