Look for India’s prime minister to lay the cornerstone Jan. 2 for Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.’s new plant to build Light Utility Helicopters for the nation’s army and air force. Narendra Modi will visit the 610-acre site in Tumakuru, northwest of HAL’s headquarters in Bangalore in Karnataka state. HAL is under pressure to meet its schedule for fielding the replacement for the military’s obsolete Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. The company this month set up a joint venture with Russia’s Rostec to build 200 Kamov Ka-226Ts in India; those aircraft perform light utility missions.
