Lord Corp. completed and delivered its first V-280 Valor elastomeric rotor bearings to Bell Helicopter in the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator program.
The manufacturing company built the units in 28 months at its Erie, Pennsylvania, facility. Those bearings can accommodate high loads and blade motions without lubrication.
The V-280 is Bell's offering for U.S Army-led program, the precursor to the Defense Dept.'s Future Vertical Lift program. The latter aims to replace 2,000 to 4,000 medium utility and attack helicopters.
Bell said the aircraft should be able to fly its first tethered flight in September 2017.
