A new automatic firefighting system for use on helipads, as well as offshore platforms, the Libero system by Air Systems S.R.L. is designed to extinguish helipad fires without endangering firefighters or occupants of the helicopter.

The Italian-made system is installed under the perimeter of the helipad and is automatically activated when a fire on a helicopter is sensed. The system can also be activated manually. It is made of stainless steel and requires low maintenance, according to the company, which said the foam used is environmentally safe and has been accepted by the Italian government. So far, one has been installed, at an airport in Cagliari, Italy. Patrizia Serra of Air Systems S.R.L. said other companies have purchased the system.
