Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority has authorized the use of night-vision goggles in the areas of law enforcement and emergency rescue and fire fighting. According to The Australian Business, the Queensland Government’s Emergency Management Queensland has become the first operator to be certified to use the goggles. The decision to use the goggles came after a civil aviation order had allowed some operators to use the technology. The use of the goggles will allow landing in unsurveyed areas where landing may be difficult. The emergency service had traditionally used night sun searchlights to land in unsurveyed areas, but that method limited the pilot’s field of vision and the ability to discern obstacles and terrain.
