South Africa will invest another 962 million rand ($146 million) in the Rooivalk attack helicopter program, despite its manufacturer questioning the viability of the program, according to the South African Web site ITWeb. Once the aircraft is operational, South Africa plans to use it for peace support operations, particularly in peace enforcement operations of the United Nations or the African Union. ITWeb said Denel CEO Shaun Liebenberg told South Africa's Parliament late last month that the Air Force would have to make a "strategic decision" on the future of the Rooivalk in the light of its "potential obsolescence and redundancy."
