Pursuant to a decree signed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last month, the Russian Air Force is ready to send four Mi-8MT helicopters and support personnel to the African country of Chad and the Central African Republic. They will be part of a UN mandate issued in March, 2008 to facilitate humanitarian efforts and defend Sudanese refugees and internally displaced Chadians. The agreement will keep the detachment in the area for at least one year and calls for the Mi-8MT heavy assault helicopters to be unarmed. Related news
