On Nov. 24, a panel of emergency medical systems experts convened in Linthicum, Md. to explore operation policies that may have contributed to the fatal crash of a Maryland State Police (MSP) helicopter last September.  The panel members, consisting of air medical transport experts, found that MSP’s 11 Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin helicopters transported 4,100 patients in a 12- month period; a total much higher than other operations with comparable areas of responsibility. They also concluded that while MSP ran a relatively safe and professional operation, some patients were unnecessarily being flown to trauma centers when ground transportation would have been sufficient.  Since the crash and before the results of the panel’s findings, MSP revised its policies, resulting in less transports.
