The FAA has granted Gainesville, Fla.-based ShandsCair EMS pilots approval to conduct low-visibility landings at five sites in north and north central Florida using only conventional instrumentation and global positioning system guidance. ShandCair’s AgustaWestland AW109 Power is owned and operated by Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinics Inc, and is the first air medical helicopter transport program to receive this approval. Prior to the FAA’s approval, ShandCair’s helicopter, as with other EMS helicopters, could only make instrument landings at established airports with published instrument approaches.
