For the first time, the four Coast Guard helicopters from Air Station San Francisco that patrol San Francisco’s shoreline will be replaced with choppers that can be armed with machine guns. The four MH-65C Dolphins will provide armed escorts to arriving and departing cruise ships. The aircraft will also be available in case of terrorist attack. The newly armed Dolphins will carry: Belt-fed, air-cooled, gas-operated, fully automatic machine guns that are four-ft long and 28 pds, fire 7.62 mm bullets up to 2.5 mi and can fire 200 rounds per min in 10- to 13-sec bursts with 2-3 sec between bursts.
